Sustainability Beyond Materials:

How Operations Shape a More Responsible Footwear Supply Chain

Sustainability in footwear goes beyond materials. It extends into how products are made, how resources are managed, and how teams operate across the supply chain. Operational sustainability in footwear manufacturing plays a critical role in reducing environmental impact at scale.

This article explores how DSC® integrates sustainability into its operations through energy efficiency, water stewardship, employee engagement, and closed-loop manufacturing, supporting a more responsible and resilient footwear supply chain.

Why Operational Sustainability Matters

It is relatively easy to understand how materials can support more sustainable footwear. Bio-based inputs, recycled content, and circular design strategies are visible and increasingly familiar. But they are only part of the equation.

What often goes unseen is how those materials are produced. Across the footwear and apparel industry, manufacturing processes can require significant energy, water, and raw material inputs, while also generating waste and byproducts that impact the environment.

To make more responsible sourcing decisions, it is important to look beyond materials alone and consider the full picture. How are suppliers managing their operations? What steps are being taken to reduce emissions, conserve resources, and minimize waste at scale?

At DSC®, sustainability is approached as an integrated system spanning materials, operations, and people, helping drive more responsible footwear manufacturing practices.

Improving Efficiency in Footwear Manufacturing Operations

At DSC®, operational sustainability is built into how we work every day. We take a thoughtful approach to how our manufacturing processes impact the environment, focusing on reducing our footprint while supporting the long-term future of both the industry and our supply chain.

By prioritizing efficiency across our operations, we implement systems and practices designed to reduce energy use, minimize waste, and operate more responsibly at scale.

Water Stewardship and Resource Management

Responsible resource management is a key part of reducing our environmental impact. Across our manufacturing facilities, we have implemented solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, and water-saving technologies such as smart faucets to support more efficient use of natural resources. To support our sustainability goals, we implement energy management systems that provide visibility into machine-level energy usage. These insights help guide ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and reduce the overall environmental impact of our operations.

We also prioritize transparency and accountability through a range of recognized third-party certifications and assessment frameworks. These include ISO certifications for product carbon footprint reporting, along with additional certifications that support environmental and quality management across our operations. We actively maintain and renew these certifications on a yearly basis to ensure continuous compliance and improvement.

As Steven Jian, DSC’s sustainability leader shares:

“We see sustainability as more than just responding to expectations; it’s a key part of how we stay competitive. At DSC®, we take a global approach, continuing to invest in energy efficiency, water management, and improvements in our manufacturing processes. As the landscape evolves, these efforts help us operate more responsibly while strengthening our long-term resilience and performance.”

We hold certifications such as Global Recycled Standard (GRS), Intertek and participate in tools like the Higg Index that help verify our materials, processes, and environmental performance. Together, these efforts strengthen trust and transparency across the footwear supply chain, while making sure our efforts are effective.

Closing the Loop: Reducing Material Waste

Another key part of our operational sustainability efforts is focused on closing the loop in our production processes. Through our 3R approach, Reduce, Reuse, Regrind, we collect, sort, and reprocess in-house production scraps so they can be reintegrated into new high-performance foam materials.

These practices are applied across a range of our material platforms, including newer innovations such as L-TAC, and DREAMCELL® VELO. L-TAC is engineered to use less heat during production, helping reduce overall energy use. DREAMCELL VELO is produced using a pouring process that generates significantly less scrap compared to traditional insole methods. By designing our processes to use materials more efficiently, we are able to reduce waste while maintaining the performance standards required for high-performance footwear.

In addition to internal reuse, we continue to explore opportunities to incorporate external waste streams where it aligns with our capabilities. Materials like DREAMCELL® Xpresso and DREAMCELL®  Bio reflect this approach, integrating recycled and bio-based inputs into production.

Together, these efforts support a more circular manufacturing model, reducing waste at the source and lowering the overall environmental impact of our operations.

Sustainable Materials as Part of a Larger System

These efforts are part of a broader approach to sustainability, where materials, operations, and people are interconnected. Building a more responsible system goes beyond processes alone. It also requires shared awareness and participation across the organization.

Engaging People: Sustainability as a Shared Responsibility

We established our sustainability committee in 2020 to advance the “People” pillar of our Run the Relay program. This group focuses on how every member of DSC® can make a meaningful impact, both in daily actions and in targeted initiatives that support our broader sustainability goals.

Through ongoing education, we empower employees with practical ways to reduce carbon impact and make more environmentally conscious choices in their everyday habits and routines.

Global Community Impact

Each year during Earth Month, we activate programs across our global offices and manufacturing facilities to amplify our collective impact. These initiatives have included community clean-ups, tree planting events, and company-wide vegan days.

Beyond their immediate effect, these efforts help build lasting habits and reinforce a culture of sustainability that extends well beyond a single month.

A Systems-Based Approach to Footwear Sustainability

At DSC®, sustainability is not a single initiative, but a comprehensive system embedded across our operations. From material innovation to manufacturing practices, every element plays a role.

Together, these efforts form our Run the Relay program, reinforcing our commitment to building a more sustainable footwear supply chain while delivering high-performance, comfort-driven foam solutions.

Looking Ahead: Continuous Progress

Just like the essence of our Run the Relay program, we know that progress is a marathon, not a sprint. Creating meaningful impact requires consistently integrating sustainable practices into our everyday operations, step by step, year after year.

And like any relay, progress depends on passing the baton, working together across teams, partners, and industries to move further, faster. If your organization shares this vision, we invite you to join us in building a more sustainable future. Connect with us to explore partnership opportunities.
