The Meaning of Run the Relay

Propelled by a mission to produce zero carbon emissions and zero waste, Run The Relay is DSC’s commitment to sustainability, with the goal of protecting our environment and the future of our foam supply chain.

We call it a relay because the pursuit of sustainability can’t be a solo sprint. This undertaking must be a team sport that we all run together, each of us doing our part to carry the baton of sustainability forward.

Progress Starts With People

DSC founded our Sustainability Committee in 2020 and we invest in our employee education by regularly hosting sustainability training workshops. Recent themes have included a training session regarding Carbon Footprint Verification (CFV) and another workshop focused on individual and corporate sustainability programs.

These workshops also facilitate employee ideation sessions which result in a number of actionable sustainability programs that we are acting on as an organization. These programs include:

This approach allows us to closely align with our customer’s values and sustainability initiatives without sacrificing product comfort or performance.

Castor Bean Oil

Castor Bean Oil

A non-food resource that thrives where no food crop could survive, castor beans need very little water to grow. Adding it to our proprietary foam dramatically reduces the petroleum content. Each of our open-cell foam series contain at least 6-20% castor bean oil.

Algae

Algae

Harvesting algae cleans water sources and prevents the release of CO2 into the environment. DSC works with several partners who provide algae material to develop an eco-friendly footbed that feels great underfoot yet maintains its physical properties and foam performance.

Coffee Grounds

Spent Coffee Grounds

When spent coffee grounds (or SCGs) are sent to a landfill, they can produce methane and carbon dioxide, two major contributors to global warming. DSC patterns with local Vietnamese coffee providers to recycle their SCGs, keeping them out of landfills and giving them a second life as a comfort footwear product.

These processes include saving foam waste from in-house production and repurposing it into new foam products, resulting in the most efficient use of materials.

Containing percentages of recycled waste from 10% all the way up to 70% in some series, 3R is a foam formula that allows us to provide a wide range of recycled content ratios in order to best suit our customers’ various design needs.
