To better understand how these evolving expectations are influencing modern footwear design, we spoke with Aaron Cooper, a veteran footwear designer and DSC® consultant whose career has spanned decades of innovation, cultural shifts, and performance-driven design within the footwear industry. From iconic basketball silhouettes to advancements in movement-focused footwear, Aaron has witnessed firsthand how the relationship between function, materials, and human experience continues to evolve.
Aaron Cooper on Designing for People
Throughout his career, Aaron Cooper has consistently viewed design through a human-centered lens. For him, good design is not defined by trends, features, or aesthetics alone. It begins with understanding the people a product is meant to serve.
“I define good footwear design no different than any design. Does it create a positive emotional response, and does it make that person’s life better? If a design hits both of those equally, the EQ and IQ, and that person buys into it, then it’s a good design.”
This philosophy becomes especially important as footwear is increasingly expected to support a wider range of experiences throughout everyday life. While many conversations focus on what consumers want from products, Aaron encourages designers to think beyond consumption entirely.
“I don’t like and don’t use the word ‘consumer.’ I do not strive for people to consume the designs I create. I want people to love seeing them and enjoy using them for as long as possible, and even then seriously question and struggle getting rid of them.”
At the center of that approach is empathy.
“Empathy is everything. It’s what you should start with, create with, sell back with, and learn from, all in hopes the population you are trying to serve invites you back.”
For Aaron, materials play an important role in supporting these experiences, but only when they contribute meaningful value to both people and the planet.
“The best materials are the ones that do more with less. Create more emotion and performance for the population you are trying to serve, while impacting the planet we are living on the least.”
And while aesthetics remain an important part of footwear design, they can never exist independently from function.
“There is no performance without style, and if all style and no performance, it’s just a fad.”
When asked how designers balance performance, versatility, and simplicity in modern footwear, Aaron’s answer was characteristically straightforward:
“Equally.”
